Why Engagement Photos Matter

Engagement photos serve several meaningful purposes:

  • Celebrate Your Love: Capture this special time in your life before you say “I do.” Revel in being a fiancé before you’re a spouse!
  • Build Rapport with Your Photographer: Get comfortable in front of the camera and build a connection with the person who will capture your wedding. This will make you feel much more at ease on the big day.
  • Establish Your Preferences: If you haven’t had professional photos taken before, it can be tough to know what kinds of angles, poses and backdrops will be your favourites. After your engagement shoot you can share with your photographer which photos were your favourites and why. This will help them be extra-prepared to deliver photos of your wedding day that you know you’ll love!
  • Create Keepsakes: Use the photos for save-the-dates, your wedding website, or even decor at your reception.

1. Choose the Perfect Location

The location of your engagement shoot sets the tone for your photos. Consider places that have meaning to you as a couple—maybe where you first met, had your first date, or a favorite spot you love to visit together.

Ideas for Locations:

  • Natural Settings: Beaches, forests, or gardens for a romantic and timeless feel.
  • Urban Settings: City streets, cafes, or rooftops for a chic and modern vibe.
  • Unique Venues: Museums, libraries, or shops to reflect your shared interests.

Pro Tip: Discuss potential locations with your photographer, as they might know hidden gems that align with your vision.

2. Timing is Everything

The time of day can significantly impact the lighting and mood of your photos. I always recommend shooting during “golden hour”—the hour after sunrise or before sunset—for soft, flattering light.

Seasonal Considerations:

  • Spring: Flowers in bloom create vibrant, colorful backdrops.
  • Summer: Longer days offer flexibility, but avoid the harsh midday sun.
  • Fall: Rich foliage and cozy vibes make autumn a favorite season.
  • Winter: Crisp, monochromatic surroundings can bring a better focus to you, the subject.

3. Coordinate Your Outfits

Your outfit choices play a big role in how your photos turn out. Aim for complementary colours and styles that reflect your personality as a couple.

Tips for Dressing Your Best:

  • Coordinate, But Don’t Match: Choose outfits that complement each other rather than wearing identical colours.
  • Stick to Neutrals and Soft Colours: These photograph beautifully and won’t distract from your faces.
  • Add Layers and Textures (for Winter and Fall shoots): Jackets, scarves, or statement accessories add interest to your look.
  • Avoid Logos and Bold Patterns: These can be distracting and date your photos quickly.

4. Bring Meaningful Props

Props can add personality and tell your unique story. Think about items that represent your relationship or shared hobbies.

Prop Ideas:

  • Blankets or Picnic Baskets: Perfect for cozy, intimate shots. Inspo shoot here!
  • Pets: Include your favourite furry friend for adorable, and possibly hilarious, moments.
  • Activities: Think about the things you love to do together. Maybe it’s playing a game of cribbage, going for a bike ride, or playing a sport. These elements can absolutely be incorporated into your photos.

5. Prepare for the Weather

Mother Nature can be unpredictable, particularly for Fall or Winter shoots, so it’s best to be prepared for any conditions. If you’re planning an outdoor shoot, check the forecast close to the date and contact your photographer if it’s looking like bad weather.

Note: For my engagement shoots I always offer the option to reschedule free of charge if the weather looks bad. I think many photographers would do the same!

Weather Tips:

  • Light Rain: Umbrellas and rain boots can make for whimsical and romantic photos.
  • Heat: Stay hydrated and consider lightweight fabrics to keep cool.
  • Cold: Bring warm layers and hand warmers to stay comfortable.

6. Camera Nerves

Feeling awkward in front of the camera is totally normal, but preparation can help!

Tips for Natural Poses:

  • Trust Your Photographer: A professional will guide you through flattering poses. It might feel awkward at the beginning, but a good photographer will support and direct you so that you feel more and more confident throughout the shoot.
  • Focus on Each Other: Do your best to enjoy the moment with your partner, and focus on your loving interactions with them more than the presence of the camera.
  • Look for Inspiration: If you have specific ideas or poses you would like to do, make sure to share those with your photographer beforehand. They can prioritize your must-have shots and favourite poses.

7. Communicate with Your Photographer

Clear communication ensures your vision comes to life. Share your ideas, preferences, and any concerns ahead of time.

Key Topics to Discuss:

  • Style Preferences: Show examples of photos you love.
  • Must-Have Shots: Highlight specific poses or moments you want captured, if you have them.
  • Logistics: Confirm timing, locations, and possible outfit changes in advance.

8. Have Fun and Be Yourselves

At the end of the day, your engagement photos should reflect your unique relationship. Don’t stress over perfection—some of the best moments come from laughter, spontaneity, and genuine connection ❤️

Preparing for your engagement photo shoot doesn’t have to be daunting. By planning ahead, communicating with your photographer, and embracing the process, you’ll create stunning photos that you’ll cherish forever.

Engagement Shoot Planning FAQs

1. What should I wear for my engagement photo shoot?
Choosing the right outfit is key to great engagement photos. Coordinate your outfits with your partner to complement each other, not match exactly. Stick to neutral tones or soft colors for timeless photos, and avoid bold patterns or logos that can distract from your faces. Adding layers or textures can enhance your look, especially in fall or winter. If you’re unsure, bring a second outfit to change things up.

2. How do I choose the best location for my engagement photos?
Pick a location that holds meaning for you as a couple, such as where you met or a favorite spot. Popular choices include natural settings like beaches or gardens, urban backdrops like city streets or cafes, or unique venues like museums or libraries. Consult your photographer—they often have great recommendations based on your vision.

3. When is the best time to schedule an engagement photo shoot?
The “golden hour,” which occurs shortly after sunrise or before sunset, is ideal for soft, flattering lighting. Seasonal factors also play a role—spring offers vibrant blooms, summer provides long days, fall features rich foliage, and winter can create a cozy, monochromatic vibe. Work with your photographer to find the perfect timing.

4. How can I include personal touches in my engagement photos?
Incorporate meaningful props or activities to make your photos unique. This could include your pet, a cozy picnic setup, or items that reflect shared hobbies like bike rides or games. These details help tell your love story and add personality to the shoot.

5. How do I overcome camera nerves for my engagement photos?
Feeling nervous is normal! Trust your photographer to guide you through flattering poses and focus on enjoying the moment with your partner. Practice beforehand by looking at pose inspirations, and don’t be afraid to communicate your ideas or preferences. Relax, have fun, and let your connection shine through!
